What happens during routine hearing aid cleanings

Hearing devices are an investment, so it’s important for them to undergo routine maintenance, just as you would with other investments, like a vehicle. Routine maintenance is an important factor in preserving the function and increasing the longevity of hearing devices. Simple steps performed at home can take care of basic dust and debris, but it’s recommended to see a hearing healthcare professional every 3-6 months for comprehensive cleaning and maintenance of hearing devices.

During the visit

During these routine visits, the hearing aid user will meet with an audiologist or an audiologist assistant to discuss how the hearing aids have been performing. They will discuss if there are any changes that need to be made to the fit of the hearing devices, or to the way they sound. They will also discuss anything that may be malfunctioning (device sounds dead, rechargeable aid not holding a charge, sound is intermittent, etc.), as well as address any questions the hearing aid user may have about function or care of the aids (e.g. simple bluetooth questions, how to change wax filters, how to adjust volume).

Cleaning

The hearing healthcare professional will inspect the hearing devices for damage and listen to them to ensure the microphones are working properly. After it’s established that the aid is in good condition, they will perform a full cleaning, which includes wiping down the device, changing the filters and dones, and using special tools to remove build up from all parts of the hearing aid. They may also place the aids in an electric drying device, which will remove any moisture with gentle heat while killing bacteria with UV light.

Repairs

If the hearing device is not functioning properly for any reason, minor in-house repairs can be made (e.g. replacing a broken wire or rechargeable battery). However, it may be necessary for the aids to be sent to the manufacturer depending on the repair needed. This will be done for you by the audiologist.
